Rhinoplasty and rhinoseptoplasty
Rhinoplasty and rhinoseptoplasty
Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, improves the shape and size of the nose enhancing facial harmony without affecting its physiognomy. This surgery, mostly requested by youngsters, corrects also congenital or post-traumatic defects and breathing problems. If impaired breathing is caused by structural abnormalities, it is necessary to proceed with a "septoplasty" in order to model and reposition the deviated nasal septum.
Preparing for nose surgery or rhinoseptoplasty
During the preoperative evaluation, the surgeon analyses the shape and size of the nose, checking for any aesthetic and/or functional defects, in order to choose the most suitable changes about nose profile and shape. The pre-surgical assessment is a very important factor to exclude possible complications (high blood pressure, bleeding or scarring problems) that could undermine the surgical outcome; therefore, it is important to follow any advice about diet, use of medications, cigarettes and alcohol.
Rhinoplasty surgery
Nose surgery is performed under general anaesthesia in day surgery or with one or two days of hospital stay, depending on the complexity of the procedure. A simple rhinoplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation; the patient is awake but insensitive to pain. Rhinoplasty lasts about 1 hour and is completely painless. The medication does not require tampons but a small plaster cast secured on the back of the nose by two patches.
Postoperative care instructions
About 48 hours following surgery, you should rest, trying to keep your head elevated. By the third day, you can restart your normal activities avoiding strenuous ones, saunas, turkish baths, sun exposure, intake of hot food and drinks; it is wise to limit the use of glasses. Furthermore, you could experience bruising and swelling around the ocular region whereas bleeding occurs rarely and is controlled by tampons. Plaster cast is removed by a week after surgery; nose could appear swollen and oedematous and, gradually, it will take the contour planned during the preoperative evaluation. It is likely that for several weeks after surgery a swelling will remain above the tip of the nose. Through careful surgery on the three parts of the nose (cartilage, bone and skin), you can get a very good outcome, remarkable after the first two weeks and definitive between 8-12 months.
Scars in rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is performed using either a closed procedure, where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure, where an incision is made across the columella, so scars are inconspicuous.
FAQ
Who undergoes nose surgery?
Patients who want to improve the shape and size of their nose and / or correct congenital or post-traumatic defects and breathing problems. If impaired breathing is caused by structural abnormalities in the nose, it is necessary to proceed with a "rhinoseptoplasty".
Is there any age limit to undergo this type of plastic surgery?
It is necessary to wait the full development of cartilage and bone structures, which occurs around the age of 15-16, to perform a rhinoplasty or septoplasty. By the age of 18, when nose structure will no longer change, it is possible to undergo rhinoplasty or septoplasty.
Is it possible to combine nose surgery with other cosmetic surgery?
Rhinoplasty and rhinoseptoplasty can be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as blepharoplasty, facelift and chin surgery.
Are there risks and / or complications for this type of plastic surgery?
Rhinoplasty is certainly among the most difficult and complex interventions in cosmetic surgery. A skilful surgeon performing in accredited facilities, equipped with anaesthesiologists and adequate operating theatres, ensures a very satisfactory outcome, as planned during the preoperative examination. Since rhinoplasty is a quite invasive surgery, patients could experience complications during the postoperative period that can be healed and / or prevented if qualified surgeons who perform plastic surgery procedures in accredited facilities carry out surgery. Furthermore, it is important to follow any advice about diet, use of medications, cigarettes and alcohol.
