Botulinum toxin
Botulinum toxin
Botulinum toxin is a medication that allows inhibiting temporarily the action of mimic muscles of the face, thus reducing the formation of expression lines. There are seven types of botulinum neurotoxin (A, B, C1, D, E, F and G) produced by Clostridium Botulinum selected bacteria. Those used in humans and commercially are type A (Vistabex, Vistabel, Botox, Botoxin, Dysport) and type B (Myobloc and Neurobloc). Initially, botulinum toxin was used in medicine to prevent neuromuscular spasms of the eyelids and to correct strabismus, but since 1987, it began to be used in the United States even in cosmetic surgery. In Italy, the use of botulinum toxin has been authorized by the Ministry of Health in 2004 limited to only one type of substance called Vistabex (in Italy), Botox (in the U.S.) or Vistabel (in France), and only for the treatment of glabellar lines in patients aged 65 years, on condition that the product is injected by a specialist in plastic surgery, dermatology, neurology or maxillofacial surgery. Who undergoes this type of treatment? Even if the drug has been approved only for the treatment of glabellar lines (i.e. wrinkles between the eyebrows), botulinum toxin is used for the treatment of facial wrinkles (dynamics) of the upper part of the face (forehead and periocular region). Can botulinum toxin also be used to reduce excessive sweating? "Hyperhidrosis", excessive sweating in the underarm region, hands or feet can be effectively eliminated by botulinum injections.
How is botulinum toxin used in cosmetic surgery?
Botulinum toxin is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle.
Which type of anaesthesia is performed?
Being virtually painless, treatments with botulinum toxin do not require any anaesthesia. Injections are carried out within the facial muscles and leave no visible marks.
How long does the treatment take?
Treatments with botulinum toxin are reversible, last a few minutes and leave no visible after-effects that may prevent the immediate resumption of daily activities, explaining the widespread success of this new treatment in cosmetics.
What kind of result can be obtained with this type of treatment?
Botulinum toxin, inhibiting temporarily the action of mimic muscles of the face, reduces the formation of expression lines. The effect of relaxation of facial muscles and wrinkle reduction starts after about 4-5 days after treatment and lasts about 4-6 months, thereafter patients can repeat the treatment periodically.
