Liposculpture
Liposculture
As body contouring techniques, liposcultpure and liposuction remove localized
fat deposits
from specific areas such as hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, arms, chin and neck. Liposculpture, however, does not replace diets and sports but allows sucking out those stubborn pockets of fat impossible to shift and it is one of the most requested treatments in plastic surgery together with breast contouring.
Preparing for liposculpture
During the
preoperative evaluation
, the surgeon analyses the amount and location of fat deposits and skin elasticity, explaining aesthetic goals and achievable results. The pre-surgical assessment is a very important factor to exclude possible complications (high blood pressure, bleeding or scarring problems) that could undermine the surgical outcome. At the end of the evaluation, the surgeon will choose the most suitable techniques of contouring; therefore, it is important to follow any advice about diet, use of medications, cigarettes and alcohol.
Liposculpture procedure
Liposculpture and liposuction are performed under local
anaesthesia
with or without sedation or general anaesthesia depending on the area of the body being treated and the amount of fat being removed. If the area with located adiposity is delimited, surgery is performed under local anaesthesia in day surgery, whereas general anaesthesia may require one or two nights of hospital stay. By the use of
cannulae
of varying diameters, inserted through an incision, fat deposits are removed from the desired areas. This procedure includes two phases: a deep and superficial liposuction through which fat is suctioned out using skin elasticity. The
duration
of liposculpture surgery is highly variable, depending on the extent and number of areas to treat. For this procedure, it is important to rely on skilful specialists in accredited facilities that allow continuous monitoring during the postoperative phase.
Postoperative care instruction
A
compression garment
must be worn for three weeks while slight local annoyances will subside in a few days. Liposuction and liposculpture recovery occurs gradually and it is advisable to rest during the first 48 hours. Three days after surgery, you can resume your normal daily activities avoiding strenuous ones, saunas and turkish baths. If not overly tiring, most patients can return to work about 4-5 days after surgery. Initially, the treated area will appear swollen but, within 2-3 weeks, oedema and swelling will gradually disappear. The result, already remarkable after the first
three weeks
when even a sober exercise routine can be restarted, is definitive within
three months
. Results following this procedure are long lasting, as long as patients maintain a
healthy diet
and regular
exercise routine
since fat cells do not replicate after puberty.
Scars in liposculpture
Scarring from liposculpture surgery is minimal and barely noticeable since concealed within natural contours.
FAQ
Who undergoes liposculpture?
Body contouring surgery is intended for patients with localized fat deposits in certain areas of their body that cannot be removed with either diet or exercise.
Is there any age limit to undergo this type of cosmetic surgery?
There is no age limit to undergo liposculpture as long as
skin
retains its natural
flexibility
. In any case, patients whose skin has lost elasticity (e.g. the elderly) obtain poor quality results.
Overweight
patients should go on a
diet
before this type of surgery to achieve optimal results.
Is it possible to combine liposculpture with other cosmetic procedures?
Liposculpture can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures (e.g.
abdominoplasty
,
thigh
and
arm lift
,
breast reduction
or other cosmetic surgery) except in special cases where peculiar conditions of risk lead to a less challenging approach.
A
re there risks and / or complications for this type of cosmetic surgery?
low risk. However, this is a real surgical procedure where possible complications (infection, hematoma) can occur and can be healed by qualified surgeons who perform plastic surgery procedures in accredited facilities. It is, therefore, fundamental not to rely on non-specialist doctors who perform low-cost surgical interventions in unauthorized environments (beauty centres, clinics, etc.). However, it is important to follow carefully the instructions provided by the surgeon before and after the operation to decrease possible complications. Smoking can increase the risk of complications and delays healing; therefore, smokers should reduce their cigarette consumption before and after surgery.
